Unexplained enormous premium increase., August, 2016
I received my premium notice and found a 5.2 % increase. I called customer service and asked why when no claim has been made, and we live in area that is not subject to hurricanes or floods. I explained that I thought an increase of this size should be explained. The response was that they sent out the premium notice 45 days in advance of the due date. But he had no explanation for the increase. I told him that I wanted to know why, because my policy states that the liability portion of the policy could be raised by the amount of inflation for our area, and inflation is less than 1%. After putting me on hold to check my policy his reply was that all policies went up uniformly due to company wide claims. Again I asked why that wasn't explained in the premium notification. He couldn't give me an answer. I told him this will be the last time they receive a premium from me. This type of business practice needs to be exposed. It is nothing less than extortion. Where is AARP? Why are they exposing their members to this type of business practice? Who is the consumer advocate who will protect Seniors from AARP?
Denied first claim, August, 2016
I live in Yucaipa California and never had one claim until my water heater blew two weeks ago and flooded our spare bedroom. Hartford AARP denied the claim saying it was a leak over time and is was not covered. I have been investigating and it seems they decline almost all claims. I would strongly suggest finding another insurance company. They only take the money, (THEY NEVER GIVE ANY BACK), and its sad because I am a 100% disabled Vet and I live on a fixed income

We had Hartford General Liability insurance for almost 8 years. Never filed a claim till recently we had a heater leaking and flooded the entire warehouse. It was a rental property, so I called to report a claim against our liability insurance to cover the cost to repair the office wall, ceiling and the carpet which belong to the landlord. The lady adjuster called me back and saying that my policy will not cover the damage if I rent the property, lease the property, or occupy the property. So, basically on my policies that it listed all the things that they will cover and at the bottom they add this exclusions. Then I asked her what was covered by our policy, she answered: I can not answer your question. It all depends on what happens. Now I am really confused as what the purpose of purchasing a liability insurance when it does not cover the property damage to the landlord. I am so frustrated now and I am totally change the insurance company now. Check your policy for hidden clauses like mine and be aware.

I filled an auto claim for the first time ,had the policy for over 6 years. 1st time filling a claim and now they're raising my policy $300+ dollars and I'm being penalize , I was told they're going to go up my premiun for the next 5 years. for an undercarriage damage claim they're calling a collision, and saying it's my fault for driving in a puddle of water on rainy day, that damage my under carriage. There's no forgiveness, for any claim payment over $1,000.00. and if you're found to be at fault.
I'm being charge for the payment made for my claim. I do not understand, what's the point of having insurance if you have to pay it back for using the insure you're paying to protect you.

We had Hartford building and workers compensation insurance for 12 years and NEVER made a claim. Despite this over the last few years our premiums have risen substantially and when we finally closed our account with them they decided to hit us with an additional fee for the previous year that we had already paid for when they knew we had downsized for that year. The explanation and breakdown for this additional fee was predictably gibberish because it was BS. Avoid and look elsewhere!

I guess greed goes to corporations that pretend to care about the customer. AARP should not be recommending Hartford it is way out of line for all its practices. They thought they would raise our car insurance $350 for the year, I cut them off and saved that money plus roadside assistance of $90 by going with another company. The homeowners is no deal either there are much better pricing options for same or better coverage.

Claim rep changed three times in six months. Either lied or was incompetent. Suffered from PTSD and going through there process made it worse trying to comply with their directions and requirements. They had a dr review my psychiatrist and physician and psychologists notes and files after the diagnosis and treat and several batteries and tests and their doctor without further examination of seeing me discounted the diagnosis of PTSD without medical evidence to support determination. Have retained an attorney and filing suit.

For 6 years I had a business liability insurance policy with The Hartford Company administered by their local agent, Moore & Miller Insurance Agency. My premium was $425/year. Last year they asked for a thumbnail audit, which I provided, and instantly my premium shot up to $6,500/year. I was completely shocked. Even my insurance agent, Priscilla Marks of M&M was shocked by this. I immediately cancelled my policy with them, went across the street and got a new office “premises” policy which is required by my landlord. The Hartford is now asking for $7,800+ as compensation from me and, since I’ve refused to pay, they have turned this account over to a collections agency. I now know that I should have requested a “premises” policy from Moore & Miller instead of what they sold me - a general business liability policy which, I now understand, can be tied to gross annual revenue.

Claim Service Stinks!, March, 2017
While parked, my car was struck by another vehicle and the whole front end was ripped off and I was unable to drive the car away from the scene of the accident. The other driver accepted full responsibility and has full coverage on his auto policy. Unfortunately, the other driver also has Hartford insurance. So, I made arrangements through Hartford roadside assistance program to have my car towed. After waiting in my car for almost 2 hours, I called the towing company to get an ETA for pickup and they informed me that since I did not have towing on MY auto policy, Hartford canceled the tow - but Hartford didn't tell me they canceled it. I don't want to leave my car in a parking lot over the weekend but Hartford refuses to accept any responsibility until their adjuster makes a determination on Monday. They told me it's my car and MY responsibility to get it towed AND if any further damage is incurred while my car is still parked in that lot, I will be liable. I will be contacting the insurance commissioner on Monday for sure! This stinks!

They'll take your money but screw you when you make a claim. Hartford approved an estimate on my wife's car, then refused to pay half of it after the work was done, claiming the damage was from a different accident. It wasn't. We are getting our lawyer involved.

One of Hartfords clients backed into me, they sent me a $1000 check as an estimate for the damage done to my vehicle. More or less they tried to get rid of me for $1000... the damage exceeded $3000, at this point Hartford let me know my car was a total loss. My car is easily worth $3000+ mainly due to the fact that it has electronic adjustable coilovers. Hartford said my vehicle was only worth $1600 if I sell it back to them and $1400 if I keep it. I've sent in pictures, receipts and documents proving the cost of my vehicle is well over what they're trying to give me and they will not budge. They deny the fact that my car has the suspension all because I don't have receipts for the installation. It's still on my vehicle, they don't seem to take into consideration any modifications that add value to the vehicle. I've asked for my claim to be reassigned due to the unpleasant adjustor ive been dealing with and was denied. Its been over a month and i still have no idea whats going on with my vehicle and Hartford has stopped paying for a rental car... leaving me to drive my car with the quarter panel rubbing against the tire. Just everything about this company has been a joke. I would never recommend to ANYONE!!!

We have been with Hartford for several years. The premiums kept going up and we started looking around this year. We had only a minor claim a few years ago on a piece of art and wondered why they were getting so expensive. I called to verify they had the current addition of solar panels on our house and found out they had been over insuring and adjusting our values AND Premiums for 5 years!! Worse yet, in spite of no claims, they will not refund any of the money overpaid even though they admit it was their fault when we added the original solar panels 5 years ago. It makes me wonder how they will respond if we have an actual claim. We will be looking at other reviews and at other companies before our renewal date. Very sad. We trusted them.

The entire first floor of my home is currently nothing but studs and a ceiling due to significant Hurricane Harvey flooding. Nearly everything in the home was brand new. Due to health issues and age we had to hire a remediation company to gut the house before the mold started to grow. We only did so with the adjusters approval of the company's quote ($9k). The estimate for repairs is over $80k. Insurance now only want to pay us $3k for the remediation they approved and are only offering $50k to repair the house. That offer includes limitations like only refacing the kitchen cabinets... cabinets that literally do not exist anymore. This is devastating for us.

Review is "1" for everything unless current problem gets resolved. Was happy (but never had a claim) w/ customer service UNTIL TODAY, when...FRAUDULENT! HARTFORD PADDING ODOMETER READINGS, FOR YEARS! Important to read this! I just found out Hartford had been padding (increased by AT LEAST 1,000 miles a year) my 3 odometer readings for the last 2 years (and likely for the whole 8 yrs I've been a customer). Trying to get them to tell me (AND email me for documented proof) ALL the odometer readings they have for me being a customer since 2009 but getting a total run-around, them saying they don't keep that info. REALLY? Um, I don't think so. For legal reasons they HAVE to have this, especially if you're a current customer. I may be looking into subpeoning them for this info via an attorney & may have lawsuit that'll effect all their customers (ask them for YOUR odometer readings for past years up to current). I thought Hartford was the rare decent insurance company but now I have doubts. No one will give me anyone with enough REAL company authority to speak to, only a rep who is at a call center! VERY DISAPPOINTED & DISGUSTED!

When I opted to leave American Family I applied to Hartford. During the interview I was told my Homeowners premium would be higher than normal as I had made a claim with American Family some 5 years prior. No claim against Hartford but they took information that SHOULD have been protected and used it against me for no other reason than a money-grab. Total and complete BULLSHIT but these big companies can literally write their own rules and stick you as there is a clause you agree to (fine print) that says you give them permission to share your history with other such insurance firms. We, as consumers, are literally exposed to such practices that would be labeled as unlawful in any other industry. Call your Congressman or Representative and demand there changes to be made!!

On September 21, 2017 at 9:31 A.M. a company truck driven by a Timothy William Lewis of the ROCKINGHAM CONSTRUCTION COMPANY located in Harrisonburg Virginia, did a "HAIL MARY" turn right into the right side of my vehicle and into a parking lot apparently where they would commence with working / installing a very long electrical post. Due to that, the pole swung wide and struck our vehicle, shattering the windshield and traveling over the "entire" passenger roof side, sending shards of glass everywhere. The driver of that Monstrosity did NOT have the standard signs out to deter any vehicles from coming to the space they would need to make such a turn, and the only "Witnesses" to this action were apparently a co-worker in the truck with him, and my passenger.
As we telephoned the Authorities, Mr. Lewis stated that the accident would be "RECTIFIED". We have him stating this on Tape and Video. After sending all information required for a CLAIM (photos, etc.) and with their Representative FINALLY showing up Three (3) weeks after the incident, a Caitlin Carroll-Weisser (firstname.lastname@example.org) stated that they are NOT liable for repairs or damage, because they had spoken to the witnesses, which they had "NOT". Even while their Appraiser - Byron Evans was viewing my vehicle at my home, he stated that our claim had been DISCARDED by the initial Claims Taker, because that Claims Taker had somewhere else to go that week in preparation for his VACATION. He stated that he had NO IDEA why "that" Appraiser had ignored our claim. He stated that he also didn't know how "he" ended up with our case. HARTFORD Refused to pay for the damages. Their actions were "Straight Up" CALLOUS, and RACIST. Until they do, we will continue to share this story with every entity on and off the internet, within every Media Source in every State, and eventually in the Court of Law.

My mother is insured with Hartford and has been for 50 plus years, but this company takes advantage of elderly widows. Mother's house flooded after broken pipe and she has been out of her house for 7 months and still not back in yet. They wanted her to settle on 14000.00. Plus they don't want to give her living expense because she is living with my sister. No where in the policy does it say anything about you won't get this living expense if you stay with relative s. This company is the biggest rip off insurance company i have every seen. My mother ended up getting a public adjuster and this Russell guy with Hartford got pissed off and he has done nothing but drag his feet on everythin, hold a grudge and make things worse for my mother. On top of everything he said there was no reason why my mother could not have live in her house why waiting for everything to settle. Russell would you let your mother live in a house with no flooring, musty smell because it has taken so long for you to get your s__t together and make this right. If you total up all the premium s that my parents have paid to Hartford over the 50 something years they have been with them there should not have been any questions about fixing her house. What a piece of crap company, don't do business with them and especially russell he is the biggest con artist. What a joke. I will make sure too post reviews on every social network site about how horrible this company is and how horribly russell handles everything. But when your working for a family owned insurance business like he is you can treat your customers anyway you want and not worry about getting fired because no family member is going to have the balls to firer another family member. I have been with the Hartford for 15 years I had a problem with a payment going through due to my Debit card being replaced with a new card I paid it on the 2nd of February. I was not aware that the old Card number was on the site the payment was not honored due to the change. My policy was canceled immediately because of this misunderstanding when I called the Hartford on the 19th of February to Re-instate after I got a letter from them dated February 11th They would not Re-instate unless I paid the full balance for the whole year of close to $500.00 I asked if I could make a payment or even half of the amount they said no because I did not contact them soon enough. Remember the letter was dated the 11th of February which means it still needed to be mailed so the 13thor 14th it would have arrived. So 7 days or under is the time frame that you are supposed to contact them I guess. I have never had an accident or any problems always paid my bill, again customer 15 years. In the past if there was a problem with a credit card it was no problem to reinstate and take the monthly payment (which happened once before a few years ago) lucky I had a credit card or else I would have not been able to reinstate the policy and been left without insurance. This is totally unreasonable as I started with the policy because of AARP thus Hartford deals with older people that may not be able to contact them in the time frame of under a week due to illness or family illness plus most older people are on a fixed income and may not be able to pay the whole year off. I don't know what happened with this company they used to be caring but not any more they are now nothing more than another greedy insurance company that cares more for profit then for people needless to say after this I will not be continuing with the Hartford and will not recommend anyone else to do business with them.
Hail Damage Claim - NEVER AGAIN, July, 2015
I filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance in Michigan to request that I receive fair and equitable compensation for damages sustained to my dwelling, structures, and contents as a result of a hail storm that occurred on 5/27/15. The assessment of damages provided by The Hartford Insurance Company were substantially lower than the damages identified by the adjuster and certified HIAAG roof inspector from the Claims Assistance Team. Based on the report by the Claims Assistance Team, there were many items either missed by The Hartford Adjuster and Donan Engineering.
Given the overwhelming evidence from the Claim Assistance Team and the threat of taking this issue to the state’s department of insurance, the Hartford had no choice but to award me the full amount of my request.
By being persistent on my request, obtaining a second opinion, and not taking the first offer, I was able to increase my recovery from $7600.00 to $27,500.00.

It took ten days for Hartford to get and adjustor out to even look at the car. Once they did, it took so long to get the paperwork for payment that my car rental expired, my car sat ready for pick-up but Hartford had made no payment. A sorry example of customer service and care.

Involved in an accident where the other driver lost control of their vehicle due to a mechanical problem swerved into my lane and I hit here in the rear. I was initially charged with the accident but was dismissed because of the abundance of evidence I provided to the court. Both of us had hartford insurance. I sent the judgement showing I was not responsible for the accident to Hartford but they still said I was 100 percent at fault. I asked how do I appeal this decision. I was told there was nothing more They could do. If this review could prevent one person from making the same mistake I did, It was worth my five hundred dollar deductible and the time to write it.

I switched to Hartford in 2009 because I am AARP member and was hoping that this insurance will be financially reasonable since is designed for the older people. And it was when I started with them. But then year by year my premium was increasing. And when I asked why I always got some bogus excuse. Also when I wanted to insure my "near beach" house my request was denied because it was "too risky". And this year my house insurance jump by almost $300 and they said just because they are not making enough money? So I found another insurance and I am saving several hundreds $$ per year with better coverage. Please shop around - this insurance is rip off after you stay with them for few years.

A company can be great at servicing your policy (making changes, etc.), but you don't really know how the company operates until you make a claim.
My advice => AVOID this company at all costs. They will gladly take your premiums for years, but don't try making a claim.
Houses in ALL directions on my street and behind me are getting replacement roofs because of hail damage. Me? NOPE! The difference? NONE of them are insured by The Hartford.

My father has had Hartford homeowners insurance through AARP for at least 15 years and never filed a claim. We paid half of the annual premium in late December. Dad forgot to pay the balance. I got a notice on 7/7/2016 stating that the policy was canceled on 6/27/2016, called on 7/8/2016 and asked about paying the balance and continuing coverage.
They told me that the policy was "non-reinstatable" and that I must find another carrier. Asking to escalate the issue and speak to a manager did not help. I offered to pay the full balance on the spot... No dice...
Keep in mind that my father religiously paid his bills for many years, and was never late previously.
A call to my own agent with Traveler's, and a few emailed documents, got us a policy in a couple of hours with slightly higher limits and $200 lower premium.
They actually did us a favor, but I hope that the corporate-stooge bean-counters who make these policies live to be 88... just so it can happen to them too...

I had auto coverage for one year. I added my mother to my policy. They charged $50 for the remainder of policy of 2 months to add her. I never got the bill! Nothing in the mail she was ever added. I let the policy expire because they raised my rates at renewal to a ridiculous amount almost laughable and I had no accidents or tickets. I get a letter from a collection agency two months after policy expired demanding payment of the $50 which I never got a bill for. They never called, never confirmed, never sent me a bill. I take great pride in my credit and paying my bills on time. This was an insult to say the least. If you want to be harassed use Hartford. If you want your premium increase by 50% after one year go to Hartford. Will never use them again. I went back to Geico, should have never left. No charge for other drivers to use your car. No false threating letters from collection agencies.

I took out my policy with The Hartford in 2014 at a cost of $586 a year for 1 vehicle. My 2015 rate was $598. I just received my bill for 2016 and it is for $745! I still have the same vehicle, have not filed any claims or made any changes to my policy. When I called them I was told the increase was due to large medical claims they were having to pay out on other peoples policies. I told them I will be finding a new insurance company.

We are leaving Hartford. We just got a letter stating that they were raising our rates more than 25% for the second year in a row. No reason was given. We were with them 6 years and never had an accident. The quotes I'm getting for other companies is less than half of what Hartford is charging. I'm very disappointed in a company I felt was a quality company.

I am 61 years old. I drive less than 2000 miles per year do to health and easy access to shopping. I never drive during rush hour nor at night. I haven't gotten a parking ticket nor an accident in 25 years. The Hartford raised my rates by 30% after the first year. Why? "Because I live in Maryland". Yes this is the truth and their reasoning. Hartford starts out great and will take your money but it will cost you if they have to pay it back. The great floods of 2014 WERE NOT chargeable claims according to FEMA but someone neglected to tell the Hartford that. Homeowners increased 70% due to 1 basement flooding claim. I'm glad they raised it because I was able to secure insurance at a $900.00 plus savings with another company. Thanks Hartford!

I can't comment on their claims processing as we've never filed a claim. No accidents or tickets in over five years; yet they increased our premium over 23%. I received quotes from two other insurance companies for less than I was paying before Hartford tried to increase the premium. Cancelling our policy.

I was involved in a hit and run the beginning of January. Luckily I saw and wrote down the man's tag number before he fled the scene & there was also a witness who saw the entire thing and told the traffic homicide reconstructionist that the gentleman hit me. The Hartford was this man's insurance company & since he was at fault & received 2 citations proving as much, I've been going through them to fix my vehicle. I am absolutely astounded by the poor quality of their customer service and the underhanded manipulative ways they keep trying to cheap out of fixing my car. I can't believe how unhelpful and downright rude my claims representative is. They still refuse to put an original manufacturers bumper on my 2011 car. They insist an "after market" bumper is all they will cover despite a significant decrease in safety to my vehicle. Research suggests only OEM parts should be put on cars, due to the precise nature of crash zones designed to protect life and limb in the event of a crash. My husband and I would like to try and have a baby in the near future, and the idea of putting my perfect newborn child in the backseat of my car without all the safety standards that made me purchase my car in the first place makes me cringe. If you are ever unfortunate enough to be in an accident, know this company will willingly, knowingly, sacrifice your safety for their bottom line. As I research, I've also come across many consumer affairs complaints accusing them of bilking the elderly. Considering AARP recommends this company, I find that terribly disturbing as well. At this point, I'm just gathering as much research as I can regarding this shameful company and then I'm going to call my local news station and try to get them to share my story in the hopes of preventing this from ever happening to anyone else. DO NOT USE HARTFORD INSURANCE EVER!!

My office got flooded by broken pipe on the floor above us. Caused a lot of damage to furniture, carpeting, walls, and electronic equipment. Hartford sent us 2 checks with a breakdown of what checks were for. Third check they refused to give us breakdown, so didn't know how much for damages and how much for income lost. Took over one year and an attorney to finally get the breakdown. Found check just for damages and nothing for income lost. Hartford has admitted they are responsible for income lost, but now putting us through the hoops of requiring multiple income tax filings, A/R for years, etc. We have electronic billing and serial dated pictures of repairs, so simple to show how long it took to get back to full operation and how much income lost. Hartford is just delaying final payment as long as possible-damage occurred 17 months ago. Hopefully resolved in next six months; if not, will have to file a bad faith claim against them.
If you are dealing with Hartford, save yourself some time and immediately hire an attorney.

Do please NOTE that no where in Hartford's advertisement does it make reference to Matt McCoy being an ACTOR and PRODUCER. As a non-professional actor and director, by virtue of his profession, the ad bears credulity of whether he is a "believer" of what he is saying, or merely acting the role of a long time customer, who is reading a script placed before him, for which he is either getting paid or receiving a free insurance policy. He, along with "supposed" other long time customers give a plethora of kudos, including how "you will never be dropped." Firstly, for the sake of being "politically correct", I shall simply say - that is a bold-face lie.
Additionally, if and when they do not cancel your policy, they end up "screwing" you so badly with outrageous rates, that, instead of them dropping you, you are forced to drop them. For YEARS, I had not only my home, but as many as FOUR vechicles insured by them. Upon a second accident, (they claimed three), my auto insurance was DOUBLED. In attempting, on several occasions, to resolve this matter, it became abundantly apparent that a "policy" that is NOT theirs, is that "The customer is always right" or even partially right. Until I was able to do research, and find a company who truly advertises and lives up to what they offer, I remained with HaR(IP)tfO(FF)d. Upon finding one, I faxed to them all policy papers from Hartford, expressed that I wanted a quote on the exact, same coverage. TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS IN COST, I am more that happy to say that I have found a company who promises what they will give, and give what they promise. They are FRIENDLY, unlike many of the Hartford representatives, south ends of horses traveling north, with whom I dealt, they are REPUTABLE, they are AFFORDABLE! In the meantime, I am also capable and healthy enough to be able to go out and buy my own groceries and walk my own dog!!! :0)

Delay and Deny Tactics, Lies Bad Faith, August, 2016
I was on short term disability for several months this year. The Hartford Constantly engages in delay and deny tactics. I had to get documents notarized for them to even acknowledge they received them. They would constantly lie about sending information out, or receiving it. They minimized my health condition and denied my claim in bad faith. They prey on people who are sick or injured and are at their weakest. They hope you don't fight back so they can keep your money.

I was carrying both Homeowner's and Auto with The Hartford. No claims on either, but my auto was dropped. They continued to carry my homeowner's. Upon renewal, it jumped $528 three weeks after renewal. It had already gone up $235 for lack of the multiple product discount. Seems unethical they didn't determine the second increase until after the HO only renewal occurred. Shopping for a new provider at this very moment.

I am disheartened and disappointed at the treatment and customer service provided when filing a claim here at Hartford. I am a small business owner and after providing food for the luncheon at a Hartford staff celebration, I decided that this was the place to be. I guess thats as long as your stuff doesn't get stolen. Our family has been stripped to our last penny. We have nothing after all of our catering equipment was stolen. Having to rent and perform these jobs without, has really takin a toll. Our only hope was that we had the insurance. Today was one of the saddest days of my life. Losing my house, and unable to feed my children because my claim was denied. We paid our insurance bill on time every month and thought we did everything right. We were confused, the process was not explained and not easy but we did what we were asked, and asked questions when we were lost. Communication became scarce until we just couldn't not wait any longer...I want to think so much more of Hartford. Despite what others said I went with this company. I walked out on faith. For it to be thrown in my face and out on the street. This was all we had.

Had a homeowners policy with Hartford for 34 years & they were always paid on time. They cancelled it in May, & lied about the reason both to me & California state department of Insurance Case# RUS-7062984. A Disgusting Company that avidly practices redlining. I had 2 claims during the life of the policy, one in 1984, & the last one in 1998.
Lousy Service, Ambiguous Rules, July, 2016
I have 4 policies with Hartford - 2 homes and 2 vehicles have been insured with this company for over a decade. During that time I have made 2 claims. Neither were very big. Both were for water leaks in a rental property but the claims process for each claim was unpleasant and ugly. The attitude was like "how dare you submit a claim". The last one was so bad I ended up giving a 3 star (out of 5) rating for the service (the claim wasnt closed yet but I still received an email asking for a rating). Well, that was a big mistake. After I submitted that rating the claims agent took the review intensly personal and just plain stonewalled everything. I ended up calling the supervisor three times ovet two months before I actually siuceeded in finally settling that claim and getting the work completed.
Recently I bought another house. I called Hartford to ask for a quote. Long story short, after over an hour and a half on the phone I was told that they would decline to offer insurance on the new house because it had a wood burning stove and I couldnt produce a certifcate that the stove had been professionally installed and inspected. DECLINE to insure??? There was a dozen better ways to handle this: They could have simply asked that I get an inspection certificate!! Or they could have asked me to sign a legally binding document committing to have it removed by a certain date! But instead they just summarilly declared that they were declining the business. My escrow is supposed to close in two days and will be postponed if I cant demonstrate adequate insurance.
I will survive this, but no thanks to Hartford. I have already found another company that I am confident will be much less expensive over the long run. And I will be transferring ALL my policies to the new company where they might acctually appreciate my business.

We had water damage on 2 kitchens in our 2 family house. It's taken 4 weeks to get the agent to say that maybe next week they will finalize the estimate. The agents are difficult to reach and it's a game of phone tag which frustrating. I would never recommend this company to anyone. I'm sure that when they read these critical observations they, the agents, have a good laugh.

My wife and I have been with AARP The Hartford for our home and auto insurance for many years. Their rates, up until now, have been very competitive and their phone customer service in servicing our policy has been excellent. However we recently had three claims with them. Two were on my car. One was an accident which required me to supply them the same information four different times. They kept having computer errors requiring me to resubmit a lengthy set of answers. They paid the claim correctly. The second car claim was hail damage which they handled well. The third claim was on our house for the same hail storm that damaged our car. We had multiple contractors verify hail damage. Several of our neighbors had new roofs put on due to this storm. I could visually see divots in the shingles. Hartford said their was hail damage to some flashing and gutters (and obviously to my car which was in the driveway) but miraculously my roof was spared damage. We contested. Their only accepted process was for them to hire a forensic engineer who inspected the roof and, surprise, agreed with the company that was paying their bill. We asked for an independent inspector and they refused. Low cost insurance is not all that good if you can't get them to honor their agreed to coverage.

Good company. Insured with Hartford for 3 years. Rates increased dramatically this year 2017. Cancelled policies and went with Liberty Mutual. BIG MISTAKE!! Got our new policy after paying in full and received less coverage and different type than what we agreed to pay for. Liberty would make No adjustments to give is what we were told unless we paid MORE for the policy. Would have been $300 more than what Hartford was charging us and less coverage. Went back to Harrford. They reinstated old policies 3 weeks after cancelling with them and didn't charge us a penny more. Great service! But still expensive!
Premium Increase in 2015, November, 2014
State of NC Insurance Dept. has set premium for HO-4 at my limit of coverage at 119.00. Hartford wants to charge 153.00 which is a large premium increase and must sign a consent to rate form. Now I know they need to increase premiums but this is beyond what I'm willing to pay unless it is still the best option out there.

The Hartford had a great reputation & I used them in the past. Imagine my horror when, after payment, the rep called and said, “We looked at your LinkedIn page. Since you worked for an oil and gas company in the past, we cannot guarantee you will not work for one in the future. Your policy has been cancelled.”
I cannot imagine what kind of political correctness they are embracing to hold such a position when none of my current clients are in that field.

10 minutes of auto menu before speaking to a human. The person had no idea how to handle an emergency breakdown in a very rural area where cell service is spotty. Arranged for a towing company that was 2.54 HOURS away. Fortunately I figured it out and canceled the tow. Clueless. Dropping roadside and going with AAA.

They will delay every step of the process for your claim, play hot potato with client calls, and possibly deny your claim with the support of a doctors note.
It's taken them a month and a half to pay out my short term disability. As I write this it's going to take them another week to release my funds and they claim to do direct deposit. In reality it's an Electronic funds transfer and takes longer to transfer than they claim (2days). What a waste of my time.
They also act like they can't read. I sent a doctors note stating I would be returning to work on July 26th part time through August 1st. They approved leave til the 25th and didn't account for the half days til August 1st then told me I'd have to file for an extension. I had the analyst read the doctors note aloud and then they stood firm on requesting more paperwork which doctors sometimes charge a whole appointment for.
This system is a joke and the Hartford should be avoided like the plague. They've wasted all this time and have no explanation as to why. I requested my payment be expedited but haven't received a call back. If you can, go elsewhere they don't even do direct deposits
