MassMutual Insurance was founded in 1851, and sells primarily life, disability and long term care insurance. MassMutual is the lead company and includes more than 13 subsidiary companies under the name of MassMutual Financial Group. The company is represented by dedicated agents, and offers wealth management and counseling services in addition to insurance offerings.

Financial Rating
MassMutual, because of its diversity of offerings, is not currently rated by A.M. Best, but the company does provide a long term outlook of AA+, the equivalent of “excellent.” The company is rated by other financial ratings companies, however, such as Fitch (AAA) and Standard & Poor’s (AAA). The company reports assets of over $400 billion, and more than $27 billion in underwritten insurance policies.

Customer Satisfaction
In online surveys, MassMutual has received a 53% customer satisfaction rating, extremely high for online polls where unhappy customers are more likely to respond than happy ones. Of the customer complaints listed in those polls, general complaints with no focus are the most common, such as comments that read, “This is a bad company. Don’t deal with them.” which offers no information on what the problems may be or how they could affect the new customer.

MassMutual Reviews Company Availability
MassMutual sells insurance throughout the United States. The company is represented by career agents as opposed to brokers and independent agents, which could affect the bottom line of premiums. By way of example, the two states where the company has written the most policies are New York and California.

The Bottom Line
MassMutual is a well-established and well-liked insurance company. It is unfortunate that the company is not represented by independent sales agents, but the company is otherwise situated to provide you with a solid insurance policy and has the ability to back up even the highest claims filed.
