Selective Insurance has been around since 1926, being founded in New Jersey by D.L.B. Smith. The firm has a long history behind it, celebrating its 90 years in 2016, and despite its long history, it has not been resting on its laurels. Instead, the firm has been expanding coverages over the years, and has been offering its services to more and more states. In 1987 they won the Company of the Year award, along with a number of recognitions from the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents and the Professional Insurance Agents of New Jersey.

Selective Insurance offers a wide range of value-added insurance services and products to individuals and businesses in 25 primarily Eastern, Midwestern, Southern, and Southwestern states – as well as the District of Columbia. The firm offers personal, business, excess and surplus lines, auto, and flood insurance – being the 5th largest provider of the “Write Your Own” flood insurance coverage through National Flood Insurance Program. In addition, the firm is the 35th largest P&C insurance group in the country.

When it comes to customer service, Selective Insurance has been praised for being communicative and easy to work with. Customers can access payment options online and policy information through an app as well as through their independent insurance agent. In addition, Selective Insurance offers 24/7 claims handling.

The firm partners with independent agencies, which allows them to deliver property-casualty insurance products to the customers in 26 states. Moreover, they serve customers from all 50 states via the National Flood Insurance Program as well as excess and surplus. Independent insurance agencies are part of the local communities and have a full suite of options available in order to meet the needs of the individual or the business seeking to manage its risks.

The agency works with the customer in order to identify the right insurance and financial services. The agency would also take on the responsibility of guiding the customer through the claim process in order to get to a resolution that is prompt and fair, and will help the customer solve the problems that are related to their account or their coverage. In addition, e-mails and phone calls will be returned in a timely manner and, at the request of the client, coverages and options available will be explained.

A super-regional insurance carrier, Selective Insurance offers a unique business models that combines a field-based underwriting and an insurance claims model with the leading edge automation technology.
