When insurance companies calculate the cost of your premium they look at many factors including the number of drivers on the policy. Usually, the more drivers on a plan, the higher the likelihood of an accident occurring. Insurance companies calculate their joint policy premiums based on the risk factor derived from the driver with the worst driving record. The combined total cost for the complete coverage will then be what both drivers are paying. With this in mind, if the secondary driver on a policy is involved in an accident, it affects the plan as a whole. So despite the stellar driving record of the primary driver, they can expect to pay more if a collision is reported to the company. This is because in the eyes of the insurance companies they are looking at the premium as a whole instead of rewarding and punishing drivers on the policy based on their individual performances.
