Whether your vehicle is used for business or pleasure purposes the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all motor vehicles to have New York State issued automobile liability insurance coverage to obtain registration. Coverage must be maintained the entire length of time that the vehicle is registered.

'For-hire' is defined by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles as "the business of carrying or transporting passengers for compensation (directly or indirectly). 'For Hire' which includes vehicles that are leased or rented to an individual or organization who is not the title owner; while the registration remains in the owner’s name."

New York State insurance laws state that for-hire vehicles must be insured. You will need to provide the appropriate insurance certification to register your vehicle, even if you do not travel in the vehicle. If you do not keep coverage current during the period for which your vehicle is registered the DMV may invalidate your registration and license plates for a period of thirty days.
