Like in most states, having auto insurance coverage in Louisiana is a requirement to drive a car legally. If you are simply looking to comply with the state minimums, you will need to have at least the minimal amount of liability insurance coverage. Liability coverage will cover the other drivers or property in the event that you are found at fault in an accident. The minimal amount of coverage that you will need in Louisiana will include $15,000 for bodily injury coverage per person, $30,000 for bodily injury coverage per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. You will also need to have this coverage to register your car with the State.

While this is all that you will need to legally drive a car, you will likely also benefit from having comprehensive coverage as well. Comprehensive coverage could end up doubling your insurance quote, but will protect you in the event your car is stolen, damaged by an uninsured motorist, is vandalized, or if you are in an accident involving an animal. Further, if you have an auto loan to purchase the car, or have leased the car, you may be required by your financer to carry the additional comprehensive coverage.

You can also get more information directly from the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
