The United Services Automobile Association, better known as USAA, is a financial services company that caters to military members and veterans and their families.
When the company started in 1922, it served only active-duty commissioned officers, but over the years it has expanded its eligibility to many other military groups.
Reservists and members of the National Guard have been eligible to belong to USAA and use its products since 1973. Current reservists and those who served in the reserves and received an honorable discharge are eligible to receive USAA products, including homeowners insurance.
In addition to homeowners insurance, USAA offers a variety of products to reservists, active-duty military members and veterans and retirees, including auto insurance, life insurance, credit cards, auto loans and investment products.
Because the company is an inter-insurance exchange rather than a corporation, it returns its profits to its members. That and the fact that it limits is membership to military members and its families allows it to keep rates lower than it otherwise may be able to.
