Does Wells Fargo sell auto insurance?

Wells Fargo is not an insurance company, but they do provide access to different types of insurance, primarily to account holders. The misconception that the company sells auto insurance is common, and is probably due to the fact that Wells Fargo offers insurance prominently on their website, when the fact is that the offers are placed on behalf of affiliated insurers.

In the state of Massachusetts, auto insurance is not available through Wells Fargo at all. This is generally indicative of a state where the partner insurance company is not licensed to sell that type of coverage. The company may sell other types of insurance in the same state, but did not choose to be licensed for car insurance. Bear in mind that the coverage details may vary from one state to another, according to many factors including the minimum requirement laws of the state in question.

On careful examination, the Wells Fargo website contains a disclaimer regarding insurance which states, "Wells Fargo Insurance, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) is a licensed agency that represents, and is compensated by, the insurer based on the amount of insurance sold." This means that Wells Fargo is receiving compensation for providing a contact point for the insurance company, and usually indicates that you will pay relatively higher premiums in order to compensate them.

If you are interested in saving money on auto insurance, it is probably a better idea to shop with an independent agent or website than to use a site which only offers insurance from a single company. The reason for this is that a dedicated company is not able to offer you multiple policies to choose from, or provide you with comparisons between different companies so you can be sure you are getting the best price. Instead, a dedicated agent such as Wells Fargo can only provide you with a specific set of coverage's and fewer ways to customize the policy for your own needs.
