CLUE stands for Comprehensive Liability Underwriting Exchange, and a CLUE report is a special type of insurance database maintained by the LexisNexis Corporation. To be able to get your CLUE report, insurance companies must be members of the CLUE exchange, and the information contained in the report is limited to identification data and data concerning liability claims you have filed in the past 7 years.

The personal data contained in a CLUE report includes your name, age, and gender. It does not include your Social Security Number, driver license number or other sensitive information such as bank account or credit card information. The report does include your address because home insurance includes liability coverage and would be contained in the report if you have filed a home insurance claim. If you have filed an auto insurance liability claim in the past 7 years, then the make, model, and VIN of the car you filed the claim against will also be included.

Beyond the information contained above, CLUE reports are concerned with only one thing: liability insurance claims. Liability insurance includes both bodily injury and property damage liability for any insurance policy that provides those two types of coverage, which includes auto insurance, home or renters insurance, business and commercial policies, and specialty coverage such as airplane, boat or travel insurance.

Each time you file a liability claim, the date of the claim is recorded, along with the type of insurance the claim is for; the nature of the incident, how the incident was resolved, and the amount of the settlement was that the insurance company paid out. The report does not include any civil judgments or information that is not specifically related to your claims.

After 7 years, claims are removed from your CLUE report. Similarly, if you become aware of errors in your CLUE report, you have the right to request the LexisNexis Corporation to remove those claims. Go to the company's website, or call them toll-free at 866-312-8076 and explain the nature of your dispute. You will have to fill out a form and provide any proof you may have that shows how the entry is invalid. After the form has been received, the company will investigate the claim and if it is incorrect or false, will make the necessary corrections to your CLUE report.
