CLUE is an acronym for Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange. It is a database managed by a company called LexisNexis, and contains all of the loss claims reports from member insurance companies. When you apply for home, car, or other liability insurance, your CLUE report is usually pulled as part of the application process. That information can affect the rates you pay as well as whether you are accepted for the policy at all.
In order to draw your CLUE report, an insurance company or agent must be a member. Membership is similar to a subscription, and insurance companies are charged regular fees in exchange for the reports they request. In addition to your personal information such as your name, gender, age, and marital status, CLUE reports contains a listing of all liability claims you have filed for any type of insurance. If the claim was settled, the report includes the date of the settlement, the type of insurance the claim was for, the damages involved, and how much the settlement was for. The database contains claims information for up to 7 years, after which the information is removed from the report.
CLUE does not include any sensitive information other than the policy number of policies that have had claims filed. It does not include credit reports, civil or criminal records, or any other information. For example, if you have an eviction on your legal record, it is not available to someone pulling a CLUE report.
If you discover errors in your CLUE report, you have the right to notify LexisNexis of the error, along with the correct information. LexisNexis will then verify the information and make the necessary corrections. Additionally, you have the right to make notations in a CLUE report. For instance, if your dog bites someone and a claim is filed, then you later get rid of the dog, you can add a notation that the dog is no longer at your home and that will be added to the report for future insurers to take note of.
To get a copy of your CLUE report, you can either call the company or visit their website. The phone number is 1-866-312-8076, and the website can be found at //personalreports.lexisnexis.com. You will need to identify yourself and provide some other information for verification purposes, such as your address. Requesting a copy of your CLUE report is free of charge and can be done once a year or more often if you discover that questionable information may be in the report which requires your review.
