Insurance sales is a demanding job, and many agents attempt to make the job easier by using humor or more interesting by talking about long term risks that may never happen. In both cases, you could feel that the agent you are speaking with is being ridiculous, or simply laying it on to thick for comfort. There is no hard and fast rule for dealing with an insurance agent that has gone too far, but you can try a few different tactics.

Try looking at your watch and explaining that you have other things to do, politely asking the agent to cut his or her presentation short. This method may take you straight to the sales pitch, but it won't make the insurance agent give up. If you have the time to listen to the bottom line, the agent may have something to offer you, otherwise, this method may not be the best one for the situation.

Explain to the agent that you make it a point to only discuss such important matters after you have consulted your spouse. If the agent is willing to set up an appointment, get her phone number and promise to call after you have set it up with your significant other. This method won't make the agent give up either, but it will at least delay having to deal with the situation.

A simple "I am not interested" is probably the easiest and most effective way to get rid of any type of sales person. You don't have to make fake excuses, and the sentence tells the agent that any further discussion is probably a waste of time. Since insurance agents rely on sales to earn their income, most sales agents will want to terminate the discussion as quickly as possible when it becomes obvious that you are not in the market to purchase.
