I recently got my Vespa out of storage and brought it to the Portland metro area (I am currently in Lake Oswego, which is a suburb just south of Portland, but I have not settled permanently yet after my military service). My regular insurance company is USAA, but they do not insure motorcycles. I have had State Farm on my vehicle before, and they had always been excellent when there was a problem. Once, about 20 years ago, I made the horrible mistake of going with Geico because they were so cheap, and then paid dearly for that mistake when I had an accident in the middle of nowhere on a Friday night (driving between California and Oregon, on leave before heading to my next duty station) and they wanted me to just wait until after the weekend where I was until they could send someone to assess it, and didn’t want to tow it to a larger town where it could actually be fixed (to running condition), even though I managed to get the local mechanic on the phone assuring them he didn’t have the capability. The repair process was nightmare. State Farm, on the other hand, cheerfully took care of me during my high school mishaps and I often had them as my insurers when I was stationed somewhere they covered, but were cheaper than USAA. I had gone to them for coverage of my Vespa in Colorado, my last duty station, but had gone with a local company for motorcycle coverage on Guam (where I spent the last 3 years). So I wasn’t keen on shopping around for price when my Vespa got out of the shop–I already knew I wanted to go with State Farm because I trust that they will take care of me if something happens.
The shop sent me an email last month on a Saturday indicating my Vespa would be ready soon, perhaps that next day, so I went online to find the nearest State Farm agent whose photo seemed personable to me. I called the number but got directed to a call center and they were able to give me a quote. It was significantly higher than I’d had in Colorado, so I said I’d look it over. I found out that this was because the uninsured motorist coverage was mandated in Oregon and it was exorbitant, but unavoidable. So when it was time to catch the bus to pick up the bike, I first drove to the office to make sure I knew what my options were and just have them give me the temporary cards to put in the bike. I didn’t meet Scott, but ended up chatting with a nice young woman in his office who answered all my questions and went over the price differentials with me. I asked for an annual quote so I wouldn’t have to worry about paying for another year, and she ran my credit card and gave me my temporary cards. The office is close to where I currently live, but even if I move closer to the college, it’s still right off I-5 and would be easy to get to. It was a professional and relaxing atmosphere inside and I felt confident that I’d be taken care of there. I didn’t want to complicate matters by switching my car insurance right now so they have both, but she did take note of when my current policy with USAA expires in December and I think they will send me something around that time to remind me of that possibility. I will probably end up using them for both my car and scooter if it’s about the same price as USAA because it’s easier to interface with a local agent, though both companies have always given excellent service.
