Originally I went with Farmer’s because an ex-coworker friend became an agent with this insurance company. He needed some customers to get started, and I figured it would be good to have a friend representing me. So I initially had home, auto, and a personal liability policy through them.
At some point my friend left Farmers. Because of the age of the roof on my house I was unable to switch insurance companies at this time. So my account just got transferred to my current agent.
I ran into some problems with the Auto Insurance that really upset me. I had an older car and was paying a high premium despite not have any claims for over 20 years. When I asked why it was still so high, they told me that they could quote me a cheaper price if I was a new customer. What? They suggested that maybe I leave for 6 months and then return when they could quote me a better rate.
That seemed completely insane to me and an idiotic business practice. So I let my auto policy lapse and found a different provider. They call me periodically to try to get my auto business back, but I feel like they cheated me for many years. So they are kind of dead to me now. If I had the opportunity to move my homeowners insurance, I would do so as well.
