If you have a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) insurance plan, seeing a specialist outside of your network can be challenging, but you do have some options:
- Ask your primary care physician (PCP) for a referral: Your HMO may require you to obtain a referral from your PCP before you can see a specialist. However, some HMOs allow you to go directly to a specialist without a referral if they are in-network. If your PCP approves a referral, they may be able to refer you to a specialist outside of your network if they believe it is medically necessary.
- Check your insurance plan: Look for any out-of-network coverage that your plan may offer. This coverage may have different co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums than in-network coverage, so be sure to check the details carefully.
- Ask for a gap exception: Some HMOs may approve a gap exception, which allows you to see an out-of-network specialist if no in-network specialist is available to treat your condition.
- Pay out-of-pocket: If none of the above options work for you, you can pay out-of-pocket to see an out-of-network specialist. However, keep in mind that this can be expensive, and you will likely need to submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.
